A few years ago, no one had ever heard of the now infamous “green smoothie”. But today, it’s all the latest health-craze-rage. Is it the magic cure all some infomercials make it out to be? Or is it all hype?
What’s a Green Smoothie and How Can It Help You?
First off, let’s talk about what green smoothies are. Pretty simple, my friend – they are regular old, run-of-the-mill fruit smoothies with a bunch of green leafy vegetables added to them. Seems pretty basic, right? So what’s the big deal?
The big deal is that most people do NOT consume enough fruits and vegetables (not really news, is it?). Even vegetarians and vegans fall short of the recommended daily amounts – which I’m sorry, but that’s pretty pathetic! We NEED to up the amount of vegetables and fruits that we eat, EACH and EVERY day people!! Why? Because if there is ONE thing we ALL know about nutrition, it’s that fruits and veggies are your ticket to health-ville.
But you don’t like vegetables (whine, whine, sniffle, sniffle)? That’s why green smoothies just might be YOUR saving grace!
The number one reason to add green smoothies to your daily diet is this – it’ll be an EASY, enjoyable way to drastically increase your fruit and veg intake. Period. Exclamation point.
An Amazing Source of Whole Food Nutrition
Our bodies CRAVE nutrition. So much of the over eating in this country (and others too) is the body NEEDING nutrients and therefore having to consume massive amounts of inadequate, processed foods to try to get them. And, sorry, but the nutrients in a bottle (a.k.a supplements) are woefully inadequate because they are typically synthetic and isolated from the thousands of other pieces to the puzzle of whole food nutrients (the kind actually in the food) that we haven’t even discovered yet!
“It is now clear that there are hundreds if not thousands of chemicals in apples, each of which, in turn, may affect thousands of reactions and metabolic systems. This enormous number and concentration of vitamin C-like chemicals in apples poses a serious challenge to the notion that a single chemical – vitamin C or anything else – is responsible for the major health-giving properties of apples.”~ T. Colin Campbell from Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition
Translation: We need WHOLE foods because we haven’t even begun to understand what it is about the WHOLE food that makes it work for us. We think it is the vitamins, minerals and phyto-chemicals but there is so much more going on in there that we can’t possibly understand yet.
So bottom line – a smoothie loaded with greens helps you to consume large amounts of WHOLE fruits and vegetables effortlessly. And that, my friend, is why I’m a
fan HUGE fan.
I don’t know about you, but I’m very unlikely to start my day with a huge kale salad but sucking down a quart of kale-packed smoothie is no-problemo. It’s quick, easy and tastes great. Packed with water, fiber and whole-food nutrients too numerous to even begin to imagine, the green smoothie rules as the breakfast (lunch, dinner, snack) of champions.
But are they a panacea like the infomercials want you to believe? What green smoothies WON’T do for you…right this way…
